• History

  As a nearly feral child of almost ten, Alys was quick, but not nearly as quick as the bard that had been chasing her through the crowded tavern after she had been caught snatching a loaf of bread. The man, a bard by trade with lute calloused hands and broad, sweeping shoulders, had turned over tables and displaced patrons from their chairs as he had chased after the girl, though his efforts would not be in vain. He had captured her just shy of the door by the ankle when a patron had decided to trip her and hinder her escape.
  
  Alys had hissed and flailed madly as the man had lifted her clear off the ground by her leg. “Runty thing, aren't you?” the bard – who Alys would come to know as Bartrand – had grinned, swatting at the girl's outstretched hands in order to antagonize her. Naturally, Alys glared and tried again to grab at him, only to miss and scream in rage. “With a set of lungs!” he had laughed, “We could use that.”
  
  So began Alys' tutelage as a bard and repentance for being a thief. The next day, after a warm breakfast and a full night's rest on a hay mattress, she began scrubbing floors, waiting tables, and cleaning messes, all the while, Bartrand assured her these chores were all key factors to becoming a bard. Her nights were filled with music, lore, and the guiding hand of Bartrand while he taught her the bodhran.
  
  The tavern where Alys lived, worked and learned was called the Bard's Bitch, a shanty of a place just outside of city limits, had served as a front for a violent and radical revolution that was brewing. It was no surprise to anyone but Alys, who had been roughly sixteen at the time, when city guards had razed the building and burned it to the ground with a plethora of bards – and by now, friends and family to Alys – trapped inside. Alys had escaped with Bartrand, who only now, as they watched their fellows meet their fiery fate, deigned to inform her what she had unknowingly been a part of.
  
  Betrayed and frightened, Alys stole away from Bartrand – the closest thing she knew to a father – the next night, her bodhran, daggers, and her guilty conscience in tow.
